euro 24 logo At the age of 39 this is surely the last time we will see Ronaldo imperiously directing the Portuguese team who are ranked 6 in the world. In the 12 months leading up to the Euros they had won every match until the wheels came off in Ljubljana in March, and two late goals gave Slovenia an unlikely victory. They also lost their final warm-up game at home to Croatia in June. With just one defeat in the last year, the Czech Republic are in good form while Turkey can expect much vocal support from the large Turkish community in Germany. Georgia are the lowest ranked team in the tournament (75) and earned their place in the play-offs due to their performance in the UEFA Nations League. They beat Greece 4-2 on penalties in the play-off final which was held in Tbilisi.

Mulder opened the scoring for Turkey with a thundering drive in the 25th minute. Moments later Yildiz had the ball in the net again but was ruled just offside by VAR. In the 32nd minute Mikautadze received the ball in the Turkish area, turned and squeezed it between the post and lunging goalkeeper. In the second half Georgia failed to clear a Turkish attack and the ball fell to Arda Guler who unleashed a pile driver from 25 metres out (65'). Georgia threw everything they had into getting the equaliser and deep in added time Marmardashvili, their goalkeeper joined the attack. Six minutes into added time Kvaratskhelia hit the post from a free kick and the ball fell to Davidtashvili whose strike was blocked on the line by a defender. A minute later a Georgian corner was cleared, Akturkoglu raced up the pitch and slotted the ball into the undefended goal.

For the first hour Portugal had most of the possession but were unable to break down the stubborn Czech defence. Lukas Provod broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a long range effort that screamed into the left hand side of the net. Seven minutes later, Mendes headed a corner down and across the goal, Staněk parried the ball which bounced off Hranáč's shin and into the goal. Jota had a goal chalked off for offside (87')and in the second minute of added time, the unfortunate Hranáč slipped trying to intercept a cross. The ball came to Conceição who crashed it home from short range for Portugal's winner.

After a frantic start, the Czechs thought they had taken the lead after Marmadashvili blocked a close-range shot and the ball rebounded off Hlozek's face and into the goal. Replays revealed that the ball also struck Hlozek's arm so the goal was disallowed. In stoppage time the ball brushed Hranac's arm in the penalty area and after consulting the monitor the referee awarded a penaly which Mikautadze converted. A terrific performance by the Georgian goalkeeper kept the Czechs at bay until the 59th minute when a corner bounced off the post, onto Patrik Schick's chest and into the net.

Helped by a series of defensive blunders, Portugal disposed of Turkey with some ease. Bernado Silva opened the scoring with a fierce shot from 15 metres (22'). After a Portuguese attack broke down Akaydin sent the bal towards where he thought his goalkeeper would be only to discover he had come out to meet the ball, which now trundled into the goal. Should have looked first, mate. Ten minutes into the second half another defensive error allowed Ronaldo to remain onside as he was played in behind the Turkish defence. After drawing the goalkeeper out he squared the ball for Fernandez to tap it home from close range.

With six points in the bag, Portugal were already through to the next phase but this does not diminish Geogia's historic achievement. Kvicha Kvaratskhelia stunned the Portuguese with a goal just 92 seconds after kick-off. Ten minutes into the second half Georgia were awarded a VAR penalty when Lochoshvili was fouled in the box and Mikautadze put his side 2-0 up. Giorgi Mamardashvili was maginficent in goal as Portugal bombarded him with shots.

When Antonín Barák was given a second yellow card in the 20th minute it was clear that the Czech team were going to struggle. After Kenan Yıldız had his shot blocked by the 'keeper, Turkey reclaimed the ball and Çalhanoğlu fired it into goal. Tomáš Souček equalised from close range (66') and Kuchta thought he had put the Czechs ahead in the 84th minute but it was immediately disallowed for a foul on Kadıoğlu. Deep into stoppage time Turkey launched an attack with six against four: Tosun cut into the box and fired home for a late winner. Turkey finished in second place while the Czechs were eliminated.
